West Virginia is one of the states with the highest rates of disability. Those who have disabilities may find that it’s more difficult to make ends meet. They may struggle at times to earn a good living. The good news is that these financial challenges can be alleviated by turning to grant programs. There are grants for disabled in West Virginia that will help ensure basic needs are being met.

 

The grants, which never have to be paid back, are used to help pay for rent, food, clothing, and other living expenses. The programs are largely funded by the federal and state governments. These programs are helpful during difficult times when you need help paying the bills.

 

Grants for Disabled in West Virginia

 

Housing and Urban Development (HUD) – This program will help people with their housing needs. HUD is a federally funded agency that helps people avoid homelessness, pay rent, avoid foreclosure, and lower their utility bills through weatherization. Their voucher program will provide you with help paying rent wherever you live, while their public housing program will provide you with a unit to live in that is owned by the government. They will also help pay for some home repairs, such as for your heating and cooling system. To qualify, you have to meet the low income requirements.

 

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) – This program is an important one for those who need help purchasing food each month. SNAP provides grants for disabled in West Virginia that will pay for food each month at the grocery store or farmers market. The grant is placed on a debit card that can be used to pay for your items. The amount you receive depends on how many people are in your household. To qualify for a SNPA grant you have to meet the low income requirements. There is no limit to how long you can receive the help.

 

WV Works – This program is similar to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families found in other states. WV Works provides monthly cash grants for disabled in West Virginia. The grants can be used on a variety of living expenses, such as housing, paying bills, buying food, transportation, etc. To qualify, you have to meet the low income and asset requirements. There is a 60-month limit on how long you can receive the benefit.

 

Emergency Assistance – This program will provide help in crisis situations.  They provide short-term cash grants to help with living expenses. They can be used on such things as food, housing, transportation, clothing, etc. The program does limit how many times you can receive the grant. Emergency Assistance is helpful when you have unexpected challenges or bills arise.

 

Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) – If you need help paying for the utility bills you may be able to get help through this program. LIEAP provides grants for disabled in West Virginia that are used to pay for a heating or cooling bill. If you are approved for the grant it will be paid directly to the utility provider and your account will be credited. They can also provide emergency relief if you have received a disconnect notice. They also have a program that will provide you with a reduced rate on your utility bills. If approved, you will save 20% off of each monthly bill. To qualify for these programs you have to have a low income. You can re-apply for the assistance each year that you need the help.

 

Medicaid – This federal program will provide people with help paying for healthcare and medical bills. To qualify, you have to have a low income and be a legal citizen or a legal non-citizen. There is no limit to how long you can receive the assistance. Those who are approved for the program will be able to get free healthcare, including doctor visits, hospital stays, dental visits, specialty doctor visits, and more. The program will also pay for prescription drugs and medical equipment that is needed.

 

Lifeline Assurance Phone – If you struggle to pay for your phone bill and you have a low income you may be able to get help through the Lifeline program. The program provides grants for disabled in West Virginia that helps pay for phone service. If you are approved for the program you will receive a free Smartphone, which will also have free unlimited calls, texts, and data. To qualify, you have to meet the low income guidelines. You can apply online for the Lifeline program.
