Financial Assistance for Disabled Adults

It is estimated that in the United States there are over 61 million people who have some type of disability, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most of the disability issues involve mobility, cognition, independent living, and self-care. This can make it difficult for those who are disabled to meet their needs financially. The good news is that there are numerous programs that offer financial assistance for disabled adults.

Before applying for financial assistance for disabled adults it’s a good idea to make sure you meet the qualifications. Each program has different requirements in order to get financial assistance. Disabled adults may have to provide proof of their disability in order to qualify, as well as meet certain low-income requirements. You can apply for all of the programs that you feel you are qualified for. You are not limited to the number of programs you can get financial assistance from.

Financial Assistance for Disabled Adults

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) – This federally funded program will provide those who qualify with a cash grant each month. The financial assistance this program offers can be used for a variety of things, including meeting your basic needs, purchasing hygiene products, and paying bills. The TANF program takes your income into account, so if you have a low income you may qualify for the assistance. You can begin the application process online.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) – This program used to be referred to as the food stamp program. It’s funded by the federal government with the mission of ensuring that people get the food they need each month. If you have a low income or are disabled you may be able to get SNAP benefits. Those who are approved will receive a debit card that can be used to pay for items at the grocery store. You can apply for SNAP online or in-person at a local office.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) – This is a program that was specifically designed to provide financial assistance for disabled adults. To obtain SSI financial assistance you will need to provide documentation regarding your disability, as well as your income. The program is available for to those who are low-income and disabled. The program is only open to those who are U.S. citizens and have limited assets.

Catholic Charities – This nonprofit organization will provide financial assistance for disabled adults who need help with things such as transportation, food, housing, clothing, etc. There are offices around the nation, so find the one that is closest to you and contact them to start the process to receive help. They don’t typically have strict requirements regarding who can receive the assistance.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) – This program will provide financial assistance for disabled adults to help pay energy bills. Those who qualify for the help will get financial assistance getting their heating or cooling bills paid. The funds are paid directly to the energy provider on your behalf. To meet the requirements to get the help you have to apply at a certain time of the year, which varies by state and have a low income.

Salvation Army – This organization offers locations around the nation. They will provide financial assistance for disabled adults, including helping with transportation costs, food, hot meals, and clothing. They do not have strict eligibility requirements. Contact an office near you to see what type of financial assistance they offer and the process to obtain help.

Christopher Reeve Foundation – This organization, named after the famous actor, offers financial assistance for disabled adults. They provide cash grants that can be used on a variety of things, including quality of life, adaptive sports, and more. If you have a dream of engaging in horseback riding or sailing, for example, this organization may be able to provide you with the resources and financial assistance to make it happen. You can apply for help online.

Housing and Urban Development (HUD) – This federal program will help provide housing, pay for rent, make home repairs, and more. You will need to apply with a HUD office that is your state. They will also help with such things as weatherization, which will keep your energy bills lower.

In addition to these resources, contact your local churches. Many of them have programs that will provide financial assistance for those who are disabled, low income, or have emergency situations come up. Many of them provide free hot meals, boxes of food, transportation to medical appointments, and more.
